SMR-powered ships are often discussed primarily from the perspective of nuclear technology and zero-emission propulsion. But for the maritime industry, the real challenge may begin once the vessel enters service. If an SMR-powered ship costs two or three times more than a conventional vessel, its economic viability may depend on a radically different approach to design life, maintenance, training, ageing management and asset value. In this article, I explore why the 50-year life cycle could become one of the defining challenges of future nuclear-powered commercial shipping — and why Life-Cycle Asset Management may need to become a fundamental principle of naval architecture and ship management.
